When deleting information from a page (not counting nonsense that was just put up as a stub) or clearing all members from a category in order to discontinue its use, I feel it is very important to provide a brief explanation on the discussion tab for that page. This will resolve a lot of potential arguments and misunderstandings, and should be considered common courtesy. I think this is something we should adopt as a standard policy. Keep in mind, no one is questioning whether anyone has the right to delete information - what's at issue is whether or not an explanation should be provided. Please indicate below whether you agree or disagree. [[User:Xstryker|Xstryker]] 13:25, 3 August 2006 (CDT)

===Top 5 Most Popular Meta Articles===
*Disagree. If people feel like leaving comments or explanations for why they alter stuff, that's fine. But most changes made to this wiki have been uncommented, and there's been no real problems so far. What should definitely be made standard policy is respecting other wiki contributors by confronting them in private if there are questions about the changes they make, rather than making a public spectacle out of each and every uncommented alteration (because at the rate things are going... that'd be one really big circus). **Scen, this isn't about comments on alterations, this is about deletions. This also isn't about the proper forum for disputes. Let's stay on topic here. Feel free to add a new topic about disputes. [[User:Xstryker|Xstryker]] 14:49, 3 August 2006 (CDT)

***A deletion is an alteration: this is not off-topic. And "arguments" is mentioned in the first contribution to this discussion, so the topic of disputes is therefore relevent and, I believe, too important for you to simply dismiss because you feel it might not be in the "proper" place.
+
#[[List of Gods]]
***We are here first and foremost because there was a dispute over an uncommented deletion, which is something we should like to not have in the future. Having a "standard policy" regarding uncommented deletions is fine, but what happens then if this "policy" is broken? Does the offender serve wiki-time in wiki-jail, or pay a wiki-fine in wiki-dollars?
+
#[[Kupopolis Neo]]
***We're a community that has done just fine so far without the hindrance of rules, because we have a history of being able to work through things between individuals. And since all of two people seem to have thus far expressed a concern over the uncommented deletion I made, it strikes me that this is not so much a community concern when this happens, as an individual one.
+

***I am concerned because I made the alteration as it pertained to story assets I control, and Adam is concerned because he created the category in question. That is where it should have ended, and that is where disputes like this should ''always'' end, as a discussion between individuals. Granted, we don't always handle things like that, because we're human beings and subject to human passions.
+
==Top 5 Most Requested pages==
***A standard policy (whose stated purpose in the above would be to head off arguments like this one) is a quaint notion, but really won't serve much purpose in the end. People will comment on alterations/deletions if they feel they need to, if the alteration/deletion was significant enough to merit an explanation.
+
===People===
*** In this case it did not, and I think that you must look at alterations and deletions on a case by case basis to determine this. Adam and Jerry, for instance, have very little invested in the existence of a category called "Guardian Hegemony." You may have significantly more invested in a category with a much broader scope and realm of interest, and in that case yes, an explanation is probably needed to explain the sudden disappearance of a whole category.
+
*Top 5 most requested characters:
***But that's not "standard policy," it's common sense. What reasons would I have had to expect that Adam, of all people, would miss "Guardian Hegemony"? Nothing Adam has or controls is vested in that category. It represents and defines assets that I control within the story.
+
#[[Irzoile Ricrot]]
***The explanation should be implicit: Guardia is mine, and I eliminated an inconsistency. But maybe that's too much to expect that people reach that conclusion... still, I do think that the magnitude of the change should be proportional to the response to it, and clearly those two things don't match up in this case. Major change = explanation, please. Minor, self-applicable change = not so much.
+
#[[Model Steinmetz]]
***And I think the utter lack of community outcry at the destruction of the Guardian Hegemony category backs me up on that one.
+
#[[Marathon]]
***Still, as Jerry does say below, if there ever ''is'' a problem with an uncommented alteration of ''any'' kind, be it a deletion or not, the best possible route to take is contacting the alterationist in question -- respectfully, rather than condescendingly or hintingly -- and seeking the explanation from that person, personally.
+
#[[Torstensson Lenart]]
***And if asked for an explanation, it should always be given, either to the person asking, or on the public forum of the wiki. I also do think it bears mentioning that, when I last talked to Nick about it (and it's horrid of me to drag him into this argument, but I do so only to make a point), he was very unhappy that Medina had been labelled part of a "Guardian Hegemony."
+
#[[Theodore Orville Halberg]]
*** Inasmuch as it might be more polite to explain deletions when making them, it also might be at the very least considerate to talk to other writers when categorizing their stuff, because putting Medina in that category all but belittled the effort Nick has put into distinguishing Medina from Guardia, a task that has been the most laborious part of his getting back into the story after his long hiatus.
+
*Top 5 most requested gods:
*** Since neither he nor I particularly wanted our assets put into "Guardian Hegemony," they were removed. Removing all the articles within Guardian Hegemony made the category useless, effectively deleting it.
+
#[[Rainere]]
***Does that mean that the next time I want to add/remove a category from one of my NPs or CPs, I need to leave an explanation so somebody doesn't take offense? The bottom line, ultimately, is respect. Perhaps I didn't respect Adam by deleting his category without explanation, but he sure as heck didn't respect me in seeking the explanation, and may have unknowingly disrespected Nick by throwing him into a category that gave the impression that I own his stuff.   [[User:Scen|Scen]] 15:15, 3 August 2006 (CDT)

**I don't know how many uncommented ''deletions'' there have been, especially of categories or of articles, but of information either. I know most ''changes'' go uncommented.  Which honestly I'm fine with.  I feel like providing an explanation in the talk is a good way to head off the exact arguments you failed so splendidly to head off previously.  But I don't really see everyone commenting every change they make.  I know I haven't, though if I'm thinking about it I do.  I honestly think the real solution is to just provide a reason when asked for one.  It's not calling you, or anyone else, out.  It's just asking for a reason the change or deletion was made.  It doesn't have to be a big stinko mess.  If you'd originally just said, "Because I didn't like the category, because the category was derisive" or any combination thereof (or anything else!) then guess what?  This would never have even happened. --[[User:JD|JD]] 14:23, 3 August 2006 (CDT)

***... Again, I only failed to head off an argument because you dug it up out of the history. Sometimes we post stupid things without thinking about it -- ((and here's another case of post-without-think, I'm sorry)). Also, I should point out that I ''wasn't'' asked for a reason. Adam hinted there should have been one, but he didn't do it in the nicest or most respectful way. If Adam had asked me from the start, I may very well have complied. I honestly didn't realize he'd take the deletion as personally as he did, and might have offered a reason had I known he'd make a federal case out of it. But the way things went down, I took offense at his snarkiness, and then somehow Jerry got involved (because why exactly?), and here we are. [[User:Scen|Scen]] 14:41, 3 August 2006 (CDT)

There will be no further instances of Wikispam. Yesterday I looked up some code on the MediaWiki website, and passed it along to Mike to implement. The long and short of it is that from now on, only Sysops can create accounts. While Mike was doing that, I went in on the WikiSysop user name and banned all of our fake usernames that have been piling up and cluttering our boards ever since we first got targetted. So past offenders can't come back, and new spammer-names can't be created. I think we're in the clear from now on.
 +
What this means, though, is that from now on anybody who wants to create a new account is going to have to go through a Sysop. The Sysops are Mike, Jippy and Jerry (I think?). I can also help, since I have access to the Sysop password.
 +
The next step should be taking out some of the trash and reducing the clutter on our user list. But for now I'm content with the victory as we have it.
 +
If anyone was accidentally banned from the user list (though I'm fairly sure I managed to skim out only the fake names), let me know. You can email me, IM me, or send me a private message through the main Kupop boards. --[[User:Scen|Scen]] 18:20, 19 January 2009 (PST)

So now we are being hit by MMO-gold spammers. I think that it is high time we required admin approval to create wiki accounts. We already require that a person have an account in order to make edits/create articles; this, I think, is the next logical step. If it would help, I would volunteer to take on the responsibility of approving/denying account requests. --[[User:Scen|Scen]] 01:09, 19 August 2008 (PDT)

=='''**Security Issues**'''==
 +

 +
The recent breach of security on the Wiki is a huge concern for all of us. Let's talk about ways to keep little snots like "Admin" from catching us with our pants down again -- because as much as I ''loved'' spending all day reversing that innane little turdwipe's random changes, in an ideal world we shouldn't have to worry about pissants like that trodding on all our hard work. So, here I'd like for us to discuss ways to protect the wiki, and maybe have a followup on what's been done as far as tracking "Admin" down and letting him know that he picked the wrong IS to mess with. --[[User:Scen|Scen]] 17:24, 29 August 2006 (CDT)
 +

 +
I spoke to Dusty and asked him to block Admin, although the blocklist still remains empty. --[[User:Xstryker|Xstryker]] 07:45, 30 August 2006 (CDT)
 +
*Oh, and I added [[Template:Banned]] to slap on the pages of banned users. --[[User:Xstryker|Xstryker]] 07:45, 30 August 2006 (CDT)
 +

 +
:Well, when I spoke to Mike, he said that Dustin's sabotage of Admin's account in the database may have done something funky that prevented Mike from outright blocking him. ... Also... I'm not sure how much good a banned template will do  :-p  half of the back-and-forth between Admin and I was the writing/erasing of "this user is banned" across several user pages. It strikes me that the template would be just as easy to erase. --[[User:Scen|Scen]]
 +
*That's besides the point. The point of the template is that you put it on his page AFTER he is banned. --[[User:Xstryker|Xstryker]] 10:51, 30 August 2006 (CDT)
 +
::Well, then it's even less useful :-p What we should be talking about here is methods to stop things like this from happening again. A banned template won't really help in that. Blocking Admin's user account is a start, but along with that we need to dig up all the IP addresses Admin used and block those as well -- from what I understand, that involves Dustin reversing his DOG SHIT TACO attack in order to pull the IP addresses out of the database. We should also ensure that no new accounts can be created without the approval of either Mike or Dustin. --[[User:Scen|Scen]] 08:43, 6 September 2006 (CDT)
 +
*<nowiki>::headdesk::</nowiki> Neither will having an article on Guardia, but that doesn't mean it's not worth having. I merely mentioned the existence of the template as tangential side-note. --[[User:Xstryker|Xstryker]] 15:53, 6 September 2006 (CDT)

So, I went through my Kupopolis career resume for Figgy noms and IW wins, and spent a good chunk of time (on the clock!) adding them to my Wiki user profile -- as I think everyone should do, because a little patting-of-the-self-on-the-back never hurt anyone. But as I'm sure anyone who hops over to my wiki user profile can [[User:Scen|see]], the spacing is really strange. So, Adam, or others suitably proficient in Wiki-Fu: what the F? How do I get it back to normal spacing after putting up a template merit badge like that? You might be able to see that I tried using line breaks to divvy up my badges by Figgies season, but it doesn't seem to want to show up the way I mean it to show up. Help? --[[User:Scen|Scen]] 19:53, 26 September 2006 (CDT)

:::Today is December 15, my last day at work before the winter break. I was out ill yesterday, but I am soldiering through the last day today. Tomorrow begins the last 16 day stretch in the quest to end the red. I intend to post at least two new articles each day from now until New Year's Eve. It was pointed out to me by someone back in September that the quest itself may be self-defeating, because of the tendency to create new red links whenever we write new articles. But so be it! I will, at the very least, hold to two new articles per day from the 16th on through year's end. I challenge others to do the same!! --[[User:Scen|Scen]] 11:18, 15 December 2006 (CST)

*''moved from main page''
 +
 +
Okay, so Matt came up with the idea that we should have someplace to upload images to, for embedding in wiki pages. (maps, illustrations, flags, etc etc).  To that end, I set up an image shack account everyone is free to use.  There's no login or password, just a link you use when you want to log in over there:
 +
 +
[http://reg.imageshack.us/setlogin.php?login=d2b8941212cbaf4c6b43ec5793bdab9b Use this link]
 +
 +
Note that you can also upload images to image shack without logging in/registering, but if we all use one account, it will keep track of all the kupop-related images in one place. (Handy, especially if we ever decide to move them all to a different server)

===Kupopolis Mapping Project===
 +
Related to the above: I'm still working on my Kupopolis Mapping Project. At the moment I have nation maps of Eblan, Mysidia and Surgate completed, and a full-dimensional map of the Light Dimension (finally reconciling the existing separate maps of Eastern Light and Ticondera) that, per Adam's approval a while back, is official and ready to go. Anyone who wants to see the maps I've done or who has anything for me to work from so the mapping project can get a lay of the entire Web of Worlds, please do let me know, or reply here. :I'm debating on starting an interactive kupop map done in flash--one that would show not just the words, but the different "dimensions" solar systems. It would also let you save new locations to the map--but its kind of a big project to undertake and I don't like putting locational constraints on the Kupopolis universe. What do you guys think? There's a lot of discussion about religion lately. Which gods are considered part of the [[Web Pantheon]]? Should the religion portal be folded into the culture portal? Can we sum up each of the Web's relgions with a philosophy that represents their overall point of view? Should gods be treated like regular characters?

:Barring some bizarre retcon I'm not aware of, the Web Pantheon is exactly how it's listed on here, except for maybe one more neutral I may or may not retcon in. Holy crap, I actually got this to work, sorta. Let's say you just made a new page for a character named John Surname. You want to put him in a bunch of categories, and you want him to appear under his last name. Here's a little two-step shortcut that is probably only going to be used by me.

At the bottom off the page, apply the catlist template with the sorted name first and all categories to be added as parameters thereafter. Something like this:

<nowiki>{{catlist|Surname, John|Baronians|Humans|Magic users|Rainerics|Villains|Writerguy's characters}}</nowiki>

Then hit "Show Preview". You'll see some wiki template commands that you need to copy from the preview display and paste over code that created them. They'll look like this:

<pre><nowiki>{{subst:catsort|Baronians|Surname, John}}

{{subst:catsort|Rainerics|Surname, John}}

{{subst:catsort|Villains|Surname, John}}

{{subst:catsort|Writerguy's characters|Surname, John}}

Remove the extra line breaks. Also, notice that last line with the <nowiki>{{{8}}}</nowiki> in it? Don't copy any lines that look like that - they appear as placeholders if you submit fewer than seven categories (actually I will bump that up to ten in just a minute). Then save the page, and now you have categories without having to type (or cut&paste) "Category:" or your character's sorted name ("Surname, John") over and over. --[[User:Xstryker|Xstryker]] 11:39, 18 September 2006 (CDT)

Open Discussions

Security Issues (last chapter)

There will be no further instances of Wikispam. Yesterday I looked up some code on the MediaWiki website, and passed it along to Mike to implement. The long and short of it is that from now on, only Sysops can create accounts. While Mike was doing that, I went in on the WikiSysop user name and banned all of our fake usernames that have been piling up and cluttering our boards ever since we first got targetted. So past offenders can't come back, and new spammer-names can't be created. I think we're in the clear from now on. What this means, though, is that from now on anybody who wants to create a new account is going to have to go through a Sysop. The Sysops are Mike, Jippy and Jerry (I think?). I can also help, since I have access to the Sysop password. The next step should be taking out some of the trash and reducing the clutter on our user list. But for now I'm content with the victory as we have it. If anyone was accidentally banned from the user list (though I'm fairly sure I managed to skim out only the fake names), let me know. You can email me, IM me, or send me a private message through the main Kupop boards. --Scen 18:20, 19 January 2009 (PST)

**SECURITY ISSUES II: THE REVENGE (this time, it's personal!)**

--Scen 01:09, 19 August 2008 (PDT)

  • Spammer struck again. CAN WE PLEASE delete the spammer's account and restrict Wiki access so that only approved accounts can edit/add articles? --Scen 23:14, 21 August 2008 (PDT)

**Security Issues**

The recent breach of security on the Wiki is a huge concern for all of us. Let's talk about ways to keep little snots like "Admin" from catching us with our pants down again -- because as much as I loved spending all day reversing that innane little turdwipe's random changes, in an ideal world we shouldn't have to worry about pissants like that trodding on all our hard work. So, here I'd like for us to discuss ways to protect the wiki, and maybe have a followup on what's been done as far as tracking "Admin" down and letting him know that he picked the wrong IS to mess with. --Scen 17:24, 29 August 2006 (CDT)

I spoke to Dusty and asked him to block Admin, although the blocklist still remains empty. --Xstryker 07:45, 30 August 2006 (CDT)

Well, when I spoke to Mike, he said that Dustin's sabotage of Admin's account in the database may have done something funky that prevented Mike from outright blocking him. ... Also... I'm not sure how much good a banned template will do  :-p half of the back-and-forth between Admin and I was the writing/erasing of "this user is banned" across several user pages. It strikes me that the template would be just as easy to erase. --Scen
  • That's besides the point. The point of the template is that you put it on his page AFTER he is banned. --Xstryker 10:51, 30 August 2006 (CDT)
Well, then it's even less useful :-p What we should be talking about here is methods to stop things like this from happening again. --Scen 08:43, 6 September 2006 (CDT)
  • ::headdesk:: Neither will having an article on Guardia, but that doesn't mean it's not worth having. I merely mentioned the existence of the template as tangential side-note. --Xstryker 15:53, 6 September 2006 (CDT)

Community Projects

Let's use this space to discuss projects to work on.

Template Talk.

So, I went through my Kupopolis career resume for Figgy noms and IW wins, and spent a good chunk of time (on the clock!) adding them to my Wiki user profile -- as I think everyone should do, because a little patting-of-the-self-on-the-back never hurt anyone. But as I'm sure anyone who hops over to my wiki user profile can see, the spacing is really strange. Help? --Scen 19:53, 26 September 2006 (CDT)

  • Check it out. Not 100% perfect, but a big improvement. --Xstryker 21:07, 26 September 2006 (CDT)
    • That is a little better... but I'm wondering why the template's spacing is weird like that. --Scen 21:10, 26 September 2006 (CDT)

Members Alliance Congress

I think it would be great if everyone could take a few minutes and start filling out the section on the alliance congress page with at least a backbone of names of delegates from each member nation.

Since the AC is by definition an interactive element, I think it would be immensely helpful to have a list of members (and, hopefully, at some point bio pages on said characters). --JD 16:25, 25 September 2006 (CDT)

Please? Even just the head MAC will do. --Celiose 01:52, 24 October 2006 (CDT)

The Quest to End the Red

By year's end, if not sooner, I plan to have all of the red Wiki article links that I am responsible filled in with useful, non-meta content. I challenge all other active Kupop writers to do the same. --Scen 13:44, 22 September 2006 (CDT)

All the Guardian character links are now blue. The Quest continues. --Scen 21:37, 22 September 2006 (CDT)
Today is December 15, my last day at work before the winter break. --Scen 11:18, 15 December 2006 (CST)
I see your challenge, and raise you an additional two articles per day. G'wah! Four articles per days! Also, there's a strong chance I might be drunk right now.--Nick 12:55, 15 December 2006 (CST)
The quest, she ends in failure!!!! The ongoing struggle to fill out the wiki goes on, but as the year turns across all time zones tonight, my personal goal of ending the red in my portfolio stands uncompleted. --Scen 00:52, 1 January 2007 (CST)

kupop image hosting

  • moved from main page

Okay, so Matt came up with the idea that we should have someplace to upload images to, for embedding in wiki pages. (maps, illustrations, flags, etc etc). To that end, I set up an image shack account everyone is free to use. There's no login or password, just a link you use when you want to log in over there:

Use this link

Note that you can also upload images to image shack without logging in/registering, but if we all use one account, it will keep track of all the kupop-related images in one place. (Handy, especially if we ever decide to move them all to a different server)

Kupopolis Mapping Project

Related to the above: I'm still working on my Kupopolis Mapping Project. At the moment I have nation maps of Eblan, Mysidia and Surgate completed, and a full-dimensional map of the Light Dimension (finally reconciling the existing separate maps of Eastern Light and Ticondera) that, per Adam's approval a while back, is official and ready to go. Anyone who wants to see the maps I've done or who has anything for me to work from so the mapping project can get a lay of the entire Web of Worlds, please do let me know, or reply here. Scen 00:09, 10 August 2006 (CDT)

I totally found the original map of Triangle I drew back in 1999 or so, when I was packing crap at my other house last weekend. Also, the original map of blaenau gwent. --JD 02:45, 10 August 2006 (CDT)
I'm debating on starting an interactive kupop map done in flash--one that would show not just the words, but the different "dimensions" solar systems. It would also let you save new locations to the map--but its kind of a big project to undertake and I don't like putting locational constraints on the Kupopolis universe. What do you guys think? Michael 03:00, 23 August 2006 (CDT)
That sounds like it would be pretty sweet, but a lot of work. I assume you'd be drawing all new maps and stuff so that it would look all good together? Yeah, awesome but also a lot of work. --JD 12:36, 2 October 2006 (CDT)
Locational Constraints??? I think it's less about "constraints" than about lending a small touch of realism to the story by being able to tell where things are in relation to each other. ... but as to what you're planning: how's Google: Kupopolis coming along?  :-D --Scen 15:46, 2 October 2006 (CDT)
I don't know what he meant by constraints either. I just corrected the typo. --JD 15:54, 2 October 2006 (CDT)
Wow I'm good at signing things I sign them all over the place. --JD 17:46, 2 October 2006 (CDT)
...almost started! I'll get right on this when i become a pro at XML/php/flash-driven web applications. Which should be in a month. --[I forget how to stick in my name I go take a shower now]

Linking

I think there's a lot of value in including links to relevant posts at the bottom of an article. To make an external link, use single square brackets instead of double square brackets. Don't forget the http:// - it's vital.

I have started posting stuff from my lengthy 1999-2001 Kupopolis archive at http://kupopolis.blogspot.com. --Xstryker 15:55, 6 September 2006 (CDT)

Religion

There's a lot of discussion about religion lately. Which gods are considered part of the Web Pantheon? Should the religion portal be folded into the culture portal? Can we sum up each of the Web's relgions with a philosophy that represents their overall point of view? Should gods be treated like regular characters?

Barring some bizarre retcon I'm not aware of, the Web Pantheon is exactly how it's listed on here, except for maybe one more neutral I may or may not retcon in. I'm treating Chrystalis as something in-between a god and a regular character, but she's always been a rather special case. I also think religion's important enough to have its own portal, but that's just me. --Aurora 08:39, 19 August 2006 (CDT)

Neo

Since Neo is over, the number of articles we can create on various topics is finite. Did religion play enough of a role to get its own portal? Did culture? I think for Kupopolis Neo, we should roll Religion into Affiliations and Culture into Geography. I also favor splitting Artifacts into Magic and Technology.

Templates

Who wants to be the first to get us some wikipedia style infobox templates?

Xstryker 16:57, 1 August 2006 (CDT)

OK, I made one. Check out Template:Communist Protectorate or see it in action on the Communist Protectorate page.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get the Color and Image parameters to work when I copied Template:NavigationBox from Wikipedia. --Xstryker 11:06, 22 August 2006 (CDT)

Character Template

I made a character template at Template:Infobox. For some reason, I cannot get #if statements to work correctly. See Alkar the Black for an example. --Xstryker 10:32, 30 August 2006 (CDT)

Also, this is a good time to discuss what should go into our character template, since I can't figure out how to make fields optional. --Xstryker 10:42, 30 August 2006 (CDT)

  • ok, I was trying to figure this out before, but how do I go about making a new page for templates? - Michael 23:18, 30 August 2006 (CDT)

Try putting Template:Blahblahblah in the search bar. It'll say this page doesn't exist, do you want to create it? To reference your newly created template, put inside curly braces: {{blahblahblah}} --Xstryker 07:41, 31 August 2006 (CDT)

{{subst:catsort|Baronians|Surname, John}}

{{subst:catsort|Humans|Surname, John}}

{{subst:catsort|Villains|Surname, John}}

{{subst:catsort|Writerguy's characters|Surname, John}}

{{subst:catsort|{{{8}}}|Surname, John}}

Remove the extra line breaks. Also, notice that last line with the {{{8}}} in it? Don't copy any lines that look like that - they appear as placeholders if you submit fewer than seven categories (actually I will bump that up to ten in just a minute).
