Spriggan was raised by his grandmother, Sprigg, in Termina on Acacia Island. He never knew his parents and he suspects that, despite her advanced age (being well over a thousand years old), Sprigg is actually his mother. He doesn't really care though: he's long since left home to pursue his own adventuring career.

He left the Gate Dimension just before the Cleansing Wars. Part of him wonders if his grandmother's all right, but the other part remembers that Sprigg can more than take care of herself. He signed on with the Earthblade Mercenaries for the chance to expand his shapeshifting prowess through exposure to new races and creatures across the Web of Worlds.

His repertoire of shapeshifting allows him to assume the forms of some of the more mundane creatures of the Gate Dimension. It is unclear if there is any familial connection between Spriggan and Eli Cromlich, who is also a member of the same shape-shifting Doppleganger race as Spriggan and his grandmother.
