As Commander

In the Great War it was cliché to say Rimmel Coward was anything but. Rimmel lead from the front, exposing himself to enemy fire on several occasions, and was respected by his men for his great physical courage. Rimmel himself took great pains to place himself on the front lines, to direct the action in person whenever possible. Known for his great tactical skill, particularly in commanding GA Tank Troops, He was known as a difficult personality to work with by his superiors, clashing at times with Torstensson Lenart and Celiose Cole over certain strategic matters. Although he has several famous achievements and campaigns (and was twice granted the award Hero of the Grand Army), he is probably most famous for being the general to capture Grimstone Castle in Baron, ending the Great War once and for all.

History

A son of middle-class parents in the Ice Country, Rimmel joined the military in 16 WR and finished in 20 WR, just in time to kick the Ticonderans out of his native ice country. Although commissioned as a cavalry officer, he was one of the specially selected troops of mountaineers used by Celiose in that campaign. Rimmel rose through the REF Cavalry ranks and then joined the GA when it was formed, and commanded one of the GA”s first tank regiments, then still comprised of Dwarven-style tanks. He led it with great élan in the GA’s counterstroke at Winlan. Rimmel was transferred to Army Group Hyrule, under Torstensson. Rimmel and Torstensson often clashed with each other. Rimmel was a womanizer, and had coarse manners. This set him at odds with Torstensson’s insistence on discipline. Rimmel eventually commanded Tank Group A when Torstensson formed Second Army. Second Army would be the GA”s principle offensive striking force in the war, and Rimmel was instrumental in the breakout that lifted the siege of Trianable, one of the turning points of the war. He continued to command Tank Group A in the early phases of the Transbaron campaign; when Celiose decided to form another tank-heavy army, the Seventh, Rimmel was chosen to lead it. Together Second and Seventh army performed a series of what are still called “Celiosian envelopments”, which finally broke the back of Burzmale’s Dark Wrath. Rimmel clashed with Celiose over strategic matters, but it is generally believed that Celiose’s insistence on linking up with forces in Toroia was correct. Rimmel is most famous for leading the final drive on Baron, Torstensson’s Second Army being battered after the Battle of the Some River. His capture of Baron is usually the date used to end the Great War. Rimmel commanded Seventh Army in the KMT War, and led a drive that rapidly smashed through Medina. His role in the Hivan War was somewhat less pronounced. His coarse manners softened somewhat, and he began to back from his earlier clashes with his commanders. He was not involved in the Omnisent Conflict, but commanded the Attacking Force in the GA’s Duelist Exercise, meant to simulate a planetary assault.

Rimmel Papers

One of Rimmel’s last acts was to conduct an exhaustive study of the state of warfare in the Web today and make recommendations to the GA.

His analysis of the state of post Leviathan War warfare lists several overall trends: the creation of more and more elite units, an overall bias towards offensive operations, an increasing rise in space warfare, increased military professional (as opposed to conscription); the rise of mecha, and the focus on mobility (noting that most Web countries prefer fast vehicles to well-armoured ones). Most notoriously, Rimmel was less than impressed than the rise of mecha; he was dismissed as diehard with his head stuck in the past, much like Gage Rizett.

Retirement

Rimmel married Kitty, the daughter of a wealthy businessman from Centwerp. Although they both live in Centwerp they also have a home in his native Ice Country; Rimmel often serves as a speaker and new commentator; he still visits Albrook from time to time.
