History
Derik was born in the year 2297, in the midst of his father Doan's attempt to dissolve the Syndicates and place himself on the throne of Guardia. He was born two months premature; his mother, Kay, suffered grievous injuries in an attempted assassination by Doan's rivals in the Trann Syndicate. She perished, but the future Prince was saved thanks to advanced Guardian medical techniques.
Raised in the lap of luxury, briefly as the son of the Director of the Arris Syndicate, then as the Prince of Guardia, Derik could easily have grown to be spoiled rotten. But Derik's pedigree is a very good one; and his father took great pains to assure that his son was not growing up soft and stupid.
Derik first assumed the throne when his father Doan was incapacitated by an OmniSent assassination attempt. His actions in the House of Lords after his assuming control of Guardia earned him the nickname "Firebrand," and resulted in the impeachment of Generalissimo Celiose Cole.
Doan abdicated shortly after the Hivan War, and in the year 2313 Derik became King. Before becoming King, the then Prince had a romantic dalliance with Naraya, then Princess of Pandora. This dalliance resulted in a pregnancy which prompted Derik and Naraya to endure an arranged marriage, an event which almost immediately preceded Derik's coronation. Naraya gave birth to the Princess Nadia Ayana, and since that time the couple has had two other children, Prince Crono Andos and Princess Leene Naraya, who was born during Derik's absence from the Kingdom (see below).
Derik is noted for his zeal in pursuing conflict with the OmniSent. He fought personally in the Battle at Atlantis and was lost during the chaos of the undersea confrontation there. He resurfaced and assumed the guise of Alex Crant'za while amnesiac. Without memory of his past, Derik (as Alex) fell in love with Elayne Crant'za and the two conceived a child who Elayne named Alex. Regaining his memories shortly after rescuing Elayne from her captors in East Aryth, the King was urged by Sliver and Rudra to return home, where the Cleansing Wars were raging.
The King's return marked the destruction of Rajaat, the reconstruction of the Kingdom, and the Great Reforms embodied in the Charter Oath of 2321 and the Constitution of 2322.

City of Moogles
In the comic strip spinoff City of Moogles, Derik is one of the three main characters, along with Celiose and Hannibal. He is often the clever foil to Hannibal's straight-man, and collaborates with Celiose in various pranks around Hannibal's apartment. In several strips he also hosts a late nite talk show, assisted by a cow named Bud.
