History
Elayne`s background is somewhat unusual. She was born to an odd couple, a farmer from Esper and a world leader from Aryth. However, the end result was charming enough -- a beautiful little girl who may be the most potent power in the known universe.
Elayne was raised by her father, Atrus Crant`za, in a small farm outside of Albrook, completely unaware of her mother, Marien Othlan, who was in fact the Verund Cenrum of the Glory Tower in Aryth. She was also obvlivious to the fact that her mother was a powerful magic user, and in the Othlan bloodline, each offspring was usually stronger than the last.
She was a normal enough child in high school, her friendly nature garnering her many friends and her pretty features gathering her a number of boyfriends. Shortly after she graduated from high school, however, a flood took out her father`s farm, and they were forced to move. As luck would have it, another world ripe for farming that was a virtual paradise was just discovered, a world named Aryth. Atrus took his family to this new dimension, where Elayne went with high hopes after offering some tearful goodbyes to her friends.
Fate had a different future in store for Elayne, however. Shortly after arriving in Aryth, her magical power was discovered, and she was taken to the Glory Tower in order to train. It was quickly revealed that she harbored more magical power in her body than any other human being in the written history of Aryth. She would have risen to Tane Cenrum in little time at all, but the world of Aryth was laid to siege by the organization OmniSent. Most of the other members of the Glory Tower were imprisoned, but Elayne escaped to help the efforts of the resistance. Though she did little of great importance, she was still a devoted fighter in the fight against the OmniSent.
When the OmniSent was at last defeated, the Tower noted the loyalty and power of Elayne, and offered to ascend her to the seat of Verund Cenrum, where her mother, now presumed dead, once sat. Reluctantly she complied. Shortly after this, her mother was found living and well, and Elayne`s past was finally revealed to her. Marien, as well as her friend and founder of the OmniSent, urged Elayne to take another responsibility as well -- Prime Ambassador of the dimension of Aryth to the outside Web of Worlds. Elayne was unhappy with all her new responsibilities, but was more or less forced to continue her path simply because she was the most appropriate person for the job, at least in the eyes of the Arythian culture.
During this time, Elayne used her magic to help save a remnant of the last battle against the OmniSent from the ocean. The boy awoke without his memory, and Elayne quickly distrusted him, sure he was either from the OmniSent, who had imprisoned Aryth before, or from the Grand Army, who had destroyed most of the members of the Glory Tower in their last defense against the OmniSent. Atrus took the boy in, however, no doubt missing his own son, and agreed to help him until his memory returned. The boy picked a name for himself -- Alex, which would be easy to forget once he remembered himself.
Despite her initial hatred, Elayne soon grew closer to Alex, and they would have become lovers, except that Elayne didn`t dare fall for a man who probably had memories left to deal with. The tension grew between them while Elayne grew more and more stressed about her new roles and responsbilities. At last Elayne gave in, however, and the two shared each for the first time.
Ironically, the next day the Tower was pressed under attack by three separate elements -- a mutiny attempt on Elayne, a marching army from Marabon, and a group of strange invaders from beyond the Bloodbane Mountains. In the confusion, Elayne was kidnapped by the invaders and brought back across the mountains, where she was leashed by a magic collar which gave its holder control of all of Elayne`s actions. Elayne found herself a slave to a strange culture which imprisoned magic users.
Disposition
During her youth, Elayne was cheerful and easy going, and rather popular in high school. Atrus was a parent who made sure his chidren knew the values of justice and right from wrong, and Elayne grew up a knowing and very kind person.
However, as her more recent days have shown, she can be sulky and easily depressed. She doesn`t have a lot of confidence in her own abilties, and discovering that she is so powerful in magic abilities that she has no idea how to use has left her with many questions about herself, as well. She is also quick to anger, but still a passionate person with solid beliefs besides.
Elayne still bears a tremendous grudge against the Grand Army. While not so great as her hate for the OmniSent (and in turn, Rudra Tairen), she refuses to forgive the Grand Army for destroying most of the Tanes of the Glory Tower, even if it was in self defense. If she attains the position of the Prime Ambassador, Elayne has secretly decided that she will stubbornly avoid any interaction from the Grand Army whatsoever.
