History

Brer Rabbey has spent his life surrounded by the shamanistic religion of Vodoun, better known as voodoo. Born to the reknowned voodoo witch Mama Moolay, he was her apprentice in his early years, soaking in the wisdom she gave him and taking great pains to remember it. When she finally told him she had nothing left to teach him, he sought out new sources of knowledge. He started with his grandfather, Moolay's father, Papa Hoosha -- whom Rabbey called 'Gros-Papa.' His grandfather, however, had been driven mad many years earlier by a voodoo spell gone wrong, a dangerous spell called the Shadow-Walk, which would enable a person to move from one location to another by traveling through the Spirit World. Rabbey remained with Gros-Papa, however, until he grew impatient with his demented ramblings and imagined nightmares. He spent the next ten to twelve years of his life journeying across the island of Malcovia in El Nido, from one shaman or voodoo priest to the next, absorbing what nuggets of knowledge they were willing to give before moving on to the next one.

During this time, he became aware of many ancient Vodoun rites and spells that had not been performed in centuries, for fear they would anger the ancient Loa of the Isle of the Damned. Despising those without the backbone to delve as deep into the shadowy rifts of the 'Other Side,' (Spirit World), Rabbey left El Nido altogether, crossing into Medina, where he added to his now-vast knowledge of voodoo with the art of true Shadow magic. While recognizing that he himself was ill-suited to using the dark arts used by the Magus and his ilk, Rabbey did see the usefulness in the magic, for there were things that Shadow magic could do that Vodoun could not.

When his time in Medina was done, he then crossed into the Kingdom of Guardia, slipping past the borders in the time following the defeat of Rajaat and his Defilers. Using his spells and ambition, he attracted a small following and tried to form a power base, hoping to at least claim a small town as his own before the Guardian government could move in to reclaim it. He underestimated the Guardians' recovery time, and his small cult was broken, most of his acolytes killed, with only one or two escaping.

Brer Rabbey himself disappeared, and rumors had it that he had been incarcerated at some undisclosed location. Wherever he was, he recently resurfaced on Malcovia, where he entered the island's elections, winning the populace over with a "forbidden" ritual known as the Shadow-Walk, a spell which allowed a person to physically traverse the Spirit World, instead of doing it via astral projection. This feat won him the election and the island's governorship as King.
