Magitek
Magitek is short for "magic technology", and refers to using machines or other technology to duplicate the effects of magic. Invented in the Esper Dimension around 5 WB, magitek has spread throughout the Web, though different areas have different levels of magitek expertise.
Magitek Weapons and other military uses are, predictably, the most widespread application of this technology. At one time magitek was a commonly used power source for everyday use, but nations have since adopted to other power sources wherever possible to preserve so-called "magic minerals" for their more specialized uses.
An important part of magitek is the power source. Magitek requires a power source derived from one of the so-called 'magic minerals': Magilyte, Ultanium, or Dreamstone. These are inanimate substances that have 'absorbed' an amount of mana, which magitek then converts into usable energy and turns into a destructive beam, a defensive shield, an explosion, or a number of other spell-like effects. Magilyte is far and away the most common. Ultanium is a superdense, concentrated form of Magilyte used in Ultima Missiles and Ultima reactors. Dreamstone is rarely used in this way, as it is more prized for its other unique properties. Magicite, the remains of an Esper, were used for magitek in the early days, but is extremely rare in modern times.
The availability of magic minerals is why certain countries, notably the Scandian League, are limited in their use of m-tek and its related technologies.
Magitek has several limitations. Though it duplicates many more straightforward spell-like effects (such as blowing things up, healing wounds, and the like), certain spells need to be woven by a living will and are too sophisticated to be copied by M-tek.
