Wilhelm Johannes Klinten (Conservative) was Prime Minister of the Tasnica Republic from 2-17 WR, a tumultous time in Web history. Shortly after we became Prime Minister Tasnica's puppet state in Auria was overthrown by Ticondera allied with the Dark Dragons. It was evident that Tasnica would need to confront these forces sooner or later.
"Slick Willi" was by temperment a friendly, genial neko, and many wondered if he had the ability of a war leader. Although initially he sought an alliance with Baron, talks soon collapsed (in fact, sabotaged by Tauroch). In 4 WR, the Esper Dimension was discovered. Many in Tasnica saw high technology, resource-rich dimension filled with weak political entities as an opportunity; a plan slowly evolved to gain an empire an Esper, and use that advantage against Ticondera.
Initially, the plan was successful; Albrook was annexed outright, and Jidoor and Maranda forged alliances. However, Alexander Colby dreamed of dimensional unity, and an Esperian nation; he created the NAMAC and engaged Tasnica in a ten-year conflict. Klinten sacked general after general as Colby proved superior to each one, until at last General of Cavalry Rolf Julian was given command of the REF; he proved able to stand toe-to-toe with Colby. Tasnica was ultimately successful after securing support from Figaro and Doma.
After the victory in Esper came one of the greatest defeats in Tasnican military history. Allying with the TFF, Tasnican forces marched on North Viper and were almost totally wiped out; only one unit, under Franklin Yeats, made it out alive.
By this time, elections in 17 WR were fast approaching, and Tasnican involvement in the war had become a major issue. The Greens began to argue that Tasnica itself had not been harmed and the best thing to do would be to cease these pointless overseas involvements, negotiate neutrality, and and live a quiet life of isolationism. Around this time Klinten's administration came under allegations of scandal, including various shady real-estate dealings, dubious relationships with interns, and questionable use of official travel and mail services for personal business. Although individually these scandals were somewhate small, revealed as they were all at once had the effect of "death by a million cuts", and Klinten realized that for the Conservatives to win (and involvement in the war to continue), he would have to step aside for a fresh face. Stepping down, he paved the way for Rhodes Palmerston to become Prime Minister.
Klinten's leadership during the war is sometimes criticised, but it should be pointed out that it suffered from the kind of mistrust between allies that plagued the forces of light for most of the first part of the war.
