Rycar Mountbatten served as an oceanic naval officer in Tasnica and the Kriegsnavee for most of the Great War. He eventually became responsible for all of the GA’s convoying efforts. When Guardia launched its space fleet Mountbatten wrote a massive, dense tome called “The Impact of Space Capabilities on Current Military Strategy and Tactics.” The Tasnicans quickly snapped him up when the re-militarized, placing him in charge of the Republic Marine Corps Aerospace Arm. For many years Mountbatten was disappointed with the status of the RMCAA as a subsidiary arm, with many many frigates with a solid steel core of heavy battleships. He had visions of grand fleets. He came to believe it was imperative for Tasnica to gain control of space because the Republic’s large empire of space colonies was providing much of Tasnica’s raw resource base. What won them over was Mountbatten’s impressive campaign in Carrion. He actually proposed a three-step campaign, introducing a concept of ‘proportional response’ to challenge Celiose’s Total War. Although Mountbatten likes to think of himself in the grand Tasnican military tradition of Falke, Rittersmann, and Cole he seems to be much more politically-minded. What really brought him to the fore, though, was his daring leadership of the flagship Iceni against a constructed Carrionese supership. This made Mountbatten, with his good looks, a star. He’s very popular among the press. Mountbatten's new RAF eschews fighters and huge capital ships alike; the corvette, frigate, and destroyer types, fast and packing long-range firepower, is at the heart of Mountbatten's RAF. Kenny Brackhaven allowed the RMCAA to become its own force, the RAF, and has allowed Mountbatten more funding to help fight his war against piracy. Mountbatten’s main doctrine is the concept of “space lanes”, defended corridors through which goods can be moved. In his words, these lanes must be defended as vigorously as the country’s home soil. He has emerged as one of the dominant voices for Tasnica’s military establishment, eclipsing the Defense Minister and RMC Commandant Revlan Kursdorff. More than a few people believe he harbors political ambitions. Mountbatten also tries to exert some control over foreign affairs, but his views on this matter are slightly out of step with Kenny. He heads up a more hawkish faction, calling for confrontation with the communists and he has views of Tasnican military power that have caused some in the Populist party to accuse him of being a Stokkanite (not a compliment, among Populists). He often clashes with Foreign Minister Sandra Himmelsten Even if he disagrees, though, he’s far too important to Kenny’s credibility on national defense to be fired. Mountbatten was briefly married; although now divorced, he is still on relatively good terms with his ex-wife.
