History
Originally the western reaches of the Manx continent were inhabited by the Fens. Pressure from the southern Gauls caused the eventual migration of the Fens to the north, and it is thought that millenia of interbreeding between the population groups created groups such as the Leurs, Vyvs and the Ashics. Eventually the Fens existed only in the far northwestern reaches of the continent, in the areas which still bear their name today.
Thousands of years ago a Gaul by the name of Enoch the Bacchus came out of Sanzan and marched his army up the coastal plain to the area which is now Roan, first giving it the name of the destroyer goddess Erone, whom he took as his own personal diety. His campaign then turned south across the Arshai Plain and even across the Daedelus Mountains into the lands of the Moors and south into Ezo.
Roan was the center of his empire, and ever after his line ruled out of Anise in the region known as Fenwyr, presiding over a procession of tiny kingdoms and vast empires throughout the years. Though Roan was sometimes no more than an unimportant country in a far-flung part of a single continent on a backwater world, it stood the test of time as a distinct political entity all the way through the fall of Carlos Bichass and the rise of the Republic of Man.
Geography
Roan occupies a large peninsula on the continent of Blaenau Gwent, sometimes called the Manx Continent. It is bordered on three sides by water (the open ocean on two and a large bay on the third) as well as the coastal Fenal Mountains to the south. The northwest of the peninsula is very hilly and is the last holdout of the Fens, even through to modern times.
Population
The majority ethnic group in Roan are the Fens, and Roan is the only area in which they are still a majority. The minority of Gauls have historically held the positions of power, especially when they were the majority of the nobility during feudal times, though the Bichass line itself had a good number of Fens marry into it throughout the years.
Smaller minorities of Leurs and Vyvs live in the southern principalities, and less than 1% of various other ethnicities, including peoples from other worlds, live and work in many of the larger cities.
