Knight Commodore Oderic Basla was born and raised in the Forthenan city of Domina. He served in the Forthenan Army during the War of Threes, and was part of the counter-attack force that was launched against Altena following Lord Koren's failed invasion of the Forthena Plateau. Basla was part of one of the first regiments of Forthenan soldiers to be issued magitek (though this was not what the Forthenans called them) weaponry to counter the edge of Altena's magic-using troops.

After the war, he attempted to enlist in Forthena's fledgling space program, but was rejected because of his excessive weight. He struggled for years trying to drop enough pounds to be elligible for manned space flight, but was never able to make the cut. Still enamored with the notion of space flight, he would try again to serve Forthena in space, this time by attempting to enroll in the Kingdom's fledgling Atmospheric Defense Squadron shortly after first contact with the Kingdom of Guardia, but was once again not selected (this time due to the simple randomness of the lottery by which Forthena filled out the ranks of its ship crew rosters).

Oderic's time eventually came when the nations of Alter-Mana joined the Confederation. Looking to recruit as many able crewmen as possible, the Confed Space Fleet proved to be far less discriminating, and Oderic was ushered into the mid-level ranks of the enlisted crewmen. He served briefly aboard the Implacable before the ship's commanding officer, Tendrick MacHale, requested that Oderic be transferred due to "excessive indulgences while on duty" and "disrespectful tones taken with superior officers." His next assignment was on board the space station Torrento in high orbit over Alter-Mana, where he was eventually placed in charge of station security and commanded a detachment of Confederate Marines.

Basla's service with the Confederation was dull, to say the least. When Guardia took over the organization and re-modeled it as the GATO pact, Oderic was promoted to the rank of Commander, and given control of the Torrento station. During the New Wraith conflict, Commander Basla came under direct command of Grand Admiral Thames of the GSF, and his station offered support and supplemental fire for the forces that had gathered in Alterspace to fight the mecha-sporting Dark Wrath remnant.

By the time GATO was near to dissolution, Oderic had cleaned up his act and become a somewhat reputable fleet officer. In addition to command of his space station, he had become one of two major fleet commanders of the GATO presence in the Alter Dimension. When GATO finally disbanded, Oderic was instrumental in gathering most of the scattered GATO fleets together in Alter under the banner of the United Fringe Nations. And following the UFN's dissolution, Oderic was able to commandeer the entire fleet in the name of Forthena, and was thus rewarded by Duran Ferrant with the rank of Knight Commodore. Soon after being given this rank, Oderic was permitted to marry the late King Richard's eldest daughter, Winona. The two continue to tolerate each other to this very day.
