King Richard was King of Forthena during the disastrous world-wide war that wracked Alter-Mana twenty years prior to the Alter Dimension's discovery by Guardia. During that war, and in the years that followed, Richard was a strong advocate of modernization and liberalization within Forthena. After repeated invasions from Altena, Richard and his court technicians devised magitek weaponry for use by the Forthenan army. On the heels of this innovation came other discoveries that would improve the standard of living for all Forthenans, including magitek electrical power and motor vehicles.
Richard was also an advocate for social change within Forthena, and issued several proclamations to enshrine and guarantee the rights of all Forthenan citizens. This liberalization did not extend to the Kingdom's strictly monarchical government, however: Forthenan law forbade female courtiers from inheriting the throne, and so when Richard died without sons he named Duran Ferrant, the Alter Dimension's Mana Knight, as his heir.
