History

The enigmatic Priman founder of Medina's first agency of special services, not much is known about the little-seen figure known as Mako. Though he has a reputation for both being clever and for seducing female operatives of other agencies, few have been able to piece together Mako's shadowy past. It is known that he hails from the Prima in the Dragon Dimension, and it is also known that he has established numerous schools for the training of operatives through the Web. For a fee, and with a recommendation from someone in the business, anyone can enlist in one of Mako's schools, though the wily old fish does most of the recruiting himself. The first of these schools was founded on Dragon, though the location is zealously guarded, as are the locations of all of Mako's schools.

It is also rumored that Mako managed to found one such school on Alter-Dragon before that planet was discovered through space travel, though none can fathom how this was accomplished, the evidence suggests that Alter-Dragon natives were working for Mako well before the first explorers found the planet. Beyond the schools on Dragon and Alter-Dragon, it is not known how many others exist, or where they are. Mako came to Medina in 2311 (28 WR) when it became known that the new Republic of Medina was looking to found an agency of secret operatives. Drawing from the local talent, Mako enlisted Toma Levine as one of his top operatives. From his schools on Alter-Dragon he brought with him numerous operatives, including the Aradian fuser known as Zynda, the Tigran woman Kit Leon, and the Highlander Terek Longarm. From this core, the influence and power of the Medinan Agency of Special Services (MASS) grew considerably, and become one of Prime Minister Skull's most useful tools in the arena of foreign relations and diplomacy.

When Skull disappeared unexpectedly in 2313 and Tyurin Cage became Prime Minister, the influence of the agency diminised somewhat, as Cage was highly suspicious of its members and of Mako himself. Increasingly, Cage employed his own people to watch the MASS agents and report on their movements, and the new Prime Minister kept Mako in the dark about his operations in Alter-Dragon. Mako and his agency became so alienated, in fact, that he supported the return of Skull in 2316, employing his agents against Tyurin Cage.

When Skull died and the Republic failed, Mako did not flee the country, though many of his agents left for work among other agencies. Mako retreated to his mobile base of operations, his personal submarine, the Salty Sea Hag, where he and his sons monitored the situation in Medina, and worked to guard the secret caches of weapons created by Tyurin Cage from the Shadow Barons, not the least of which were Janus Cage and Margaruitte Aringail.

Mako was contacted in 2322 (39 WR) by local businesman Gorgon Wells with a plan to remove Janus Cage from power, and the two settled on a contract to attempt the coup. During the course of their relations, however, Wells increasingly questioned Mako's motives and methods, and when Cage finally was removed from power, Wells sold Mako out and made a deal with Margaruitte Aringail to stop the fighting rather than trusting the wily old fish to remove Margaruitte himself.

Mako is surly, secretive, and but also highly loyal, for reasons he won't disclose, to Medina. In particular, he was good friends with Skull, and since the noble imp's death has shouldered the responsbility of trying to help the ailing nation however he could. He is considered among the heavy-hitters of the intelligence business, nearly as respected and revered as Praxer and Norstein Bekkler.

Beyond that, his reputation for seducing other spies in his hey-day is well earned. His son Shafo was the result of an affair with a Scandian operative, and his son Fenris still does not know the truth about his lineage.

As for the number of children Mako has actually fathered, it is secret that only the old fish himself knows.

List of Mako's Known Offspring

  • Shafo - Son from an affair with a Scandian; affiliated with S/31
  • Fenris - Son of unknown origin
  • Penelope "Penny" - Daughter from an affair with a Gatian (possibly a Guardian, but most likely a Medinan); much younger than Shafo or Fenris; was affiliated with ZAPS until Norstein Bekkler fired her.
