Lionel was born in the Neko city of Dorien, in the far north of the Forthenan Plateau. When Lionel and his siblings were young, their father fell into debt and bankruptcy and lost the family grocery business. To make ends meet both Lionel's mother and father were forced to work in the gem mines, a fate that Lionel swore he would not share. Like his Tasnican inspiration, Damien Gavalian, Lionel became a weapons merchant.

During the War of Threes, he moved to the city of Maia and eventually partnered up with an inventor named Bon Voyage. He worked closely with Voyage on a device that the eccentric tinker claimed would revolutionize world-wide travel. Clearly seeing that Bon Voyage was insane, Leonel stole his "Cannon Travel" device and marketed the concept to the Forthenan Military. Working with Forthenan craftsmen, Lionel helped to manufacture a line of light and medium artillery pieces that helped defend the Forthenan Plateau against Altenan invasion. Later, Lionel's gunsmithing factories were used to produce Forthena's Mana Cannons, a line of primitive but natively devised magitek-like weaponry that was instrumental in Forthena's war effort. Following the close of the war, Lionel founded Adetum Engines, and put the knowledge of magitek power to use in creating a line of civilian vehicles for the Forthenan public.

Noting his contributions to the Kingdom, King Richard offered Lionel the hand of his eldest daughter, Prosperity. Theirs was a loveless marriage, however, and Prosperity would eventually leave Lionel and run away to Guardia with Janville Dussert. Following Duran Ferrant's death, Irzoile Ricrot offered Lionel the hand of Mia, Richard's youngest daughter, recently the widow of Henrik Manders.

As a member of King Irzoile's court, Lionel is responsible for normalizing relations with Tasnica, and is frequently sent to Tasnica as an envoy of the Forthenan government.
