Fabian was born in Albrook, the son of famed Elven soprano Arielle Lysandir by decorated GA veteran Lt. Gen. Marcus Grainger, who earned several medals during the Great War. Though his parents were in fact married, Fabian chooses to use his mother's surname as a sign of contempt for his father, whom he's never gotten along with. Arielle was quite wealthy from her career at the Jidooran Opera House, and Fabian grew up as a child of privilege, with tutors and nannies and the like. Taking after his mother, he was a musical prodigy and she encouraged this interest, seeing that he was classically trained in a wide range of instruments, including the piano, guitar, flute and cello. She herself taught him how to sing operatically. His father was determined to have Fabian follow in his footsteps as a soldier, and trained him in swordplay and other weaponry. Although he had some talent with it, Fabian had no interest in the arts of war and only dreamed of becoming a great singer like his mother.
When Fabian was nine years old, he almost drowned and came very close to death while swimming in the waters next to the family's seaside home. While unconscious, he had an extremely vivid near-death experience that left him profoundly sensitive to psychic phenomena.
The major turning point of his life would come at age 12, when Arielle was travelling home from a performance and was killed in a car accident. Marcus, who had never really been close to Fabian, took his grief out on him and the relationship grew extremely volatile as he grew older. Fabian's fascination with death and the spirit world drew him into the emerging Gothic subculture when he was in high school, and his dearest friends, Reiichi Katsushima and Serena Lassiter. The three formed a band called Sanctuary, and spent every bit of their free time writing and performing. Fabian fought bitterly with his father over his music and fashion interests, and resisted Marcus' attempts to mold him into the soldier-in-training he wanted him to be. Sensitive and a little effeminate, as well as unapologetically bisexual, he was a disappointment in nearly every possible way to his machismo-obsessed father.
Fabian began studies at the University of Albrook, largely to appease his father's wishes that it lead to a career as a GA officer (Marcus made a stipulation that Fabian couldn't collect his trust fund unless he served). When he was 19, however, he dropped out much to his father's chagrin, and announced he was going to become a rock star. Marcus disowned him, and Fabian left Albrook with 50 GP, his guitar, and the clothes on his back. He moved with Rei and Serena to Ticondera, taking odd jobs in Bonro while trying to get the band off the ground. The three decided to disband Sanctuary and started a new band called Moonchild, adding local musicians Alexei Pashkarov and Rachel Garvey to the lineup.
