One of the most (in?)famous Drow males in all of Zhanduril, the notorious mercenary leader Phaelarn Vrinn (known simply as "Phaelarn") is a maverick as mysterious as he is colorful. No one knows just where the charismatic male came from, not even Lady Ambika. All that is known is that in his youth, he was the sole survivor of the fall of his house ("Vrinn" is a surname, and not the name of any Zhanduran noble house that has ever existed). He was at the top of his class at both Melee-Magthere and Sorcere, and at one point he even briefly served as a Master at the former school, something unheard of for a "houseless rogue" such as he. However, what Phaelarn is best known for is his founding of the Veld'Z'ress mercenary band. Agents of any number of houses, including House Everhate, made overtures to him during his tenure as a Master of Melee-Magthere. However, Phaelarn always exhibited a wide independent streak, and relished his freedom far too much to put himself in thrall to another Matron Mother. Instead, he decided to make himself a force to be reckoned with. He'd long had a tidy sideline contracting out his best and brightest students to various merchant bands as guards and hatchetmen. As he became known as a go to man for hiring fighters, Phaelarn formalized the arrangement, inviting a select number of his best men to join the fledgling group.
