Sir Ralstaan is one of the five Knights of the Square Table, and the only human of Medinan descent to ever become a Table Knight. Ralstaan wields the sword Muranage, which is about as old as the Masamune and nearly as powerful. Muranage houses the spirit of Zerin, the noble Knight Captain who fought a good portion of the war with the Magus before finally stepping aside and granting Glenn the coveted post that had once been held by Cyrus. Ralstaan is the patron of the Order of the Sword.
Born just as the Syndicate Wars were winding down, Ralstaan's family emigrated from Coast Town to Truce just as the Ozzien Regime was beginning to tighten its grip on the Medinan people. Ralstaan grew up in an age of relative peace, thanks in part to Sir Daragg, then the Patron of the Order of the Sword, who was Ralstaan's maternal uncle, and who was the family's sponsor on their application for Guardian citizenship.
Sir Daragg quit the Knighthood due to a degenerative kidney disorder in the year 2310, just before the "discovery" of Gate by the Grand Army. This disorder, which would be called Daragg's Syndrome, would eventually kill the Knight seven months after his resignation, but before leaving he asked that his nephew Ralstaan be made his successor. Most were skeptical, at first, about the decision; but often the Knights find they have little choice in appointing their successors anyway. It is the holy Swords of the Knights who do the choosing. And Daragg's sword Muranage had chosen the boy as its new holder.
