VINC

Stands for "Vehicle Interface, Neural Control," a cybernetic neural implant which allows a person to control a vehicle directly with their mind. The Grand Army developed the technology in hopes of using it with the new generation of Leo tanks, but it suffered a number of problems. After evaluating test candidates, only about fifty percent of volunteers had compatible neurophysiology; only about half of those survived the surgery. Most of those that did successfully uplink with their tanks began to suffer "Severe Body Dimorphism"; in other words, they began to believe they really were tanks.

The deaths of almost all test pilots involved forced the Grand Army to cancel the program, as the Alliance Congress considered it a risky technology and an egregious waste of money. Ironically, the Grand Army had originally hoped this would be a cost saving measure, by reducing the size of tank crews from four to just one person.

VINC is largely an abandoned technology, though certain elite mecha pilots of the United Crystal States Space Force used them.
