The distinguished Senator from Matango was born in the city of Solanum, a ward of the Kingdom of Matango whose primary inhabitants are Tomato men. Heinz came of age during the Great War, but unlike many of his contemporaries in Tasnican politics, he did not serve in active combat duty.
In 42 WR, Heinz was approached by the senior senator from Matango, Horacio Truffle, and asked to run for the Senate against the Populist junior senator Reynaldo Epstein. The Heinz campaign was one of the first senatorial campaigns in Tasnican history to explicitly use racially divisive tactics (Reynaldo was a member of the human minority in Matango's vegetable-majority population) to ensure a win for the challenger.
Heinz's rhetoric, both on the campaign trail and in office, has been explosive and somewhat bizarre. He belongs to a movement he has dubbed "carnitarianism," which espouses an all-meat diet containing no vegetable matter whatsoever. Carnitarians believe that eating vegetables is morally wrong. The practice is rarely found outside of Matango, and then almost never among non-vegetable sentients.
