Solaufein was the youngest son of the Dread Lady Ambika Everhate, and as such was Thirdboy of the powerful First House of Zhanduril, lavished with all the wealth and privilege of such exalted station despite being male. However, though his unusual coppery red hair and golden eyes marked him well as Ambika's son, in temperament he could not have been more diametrically opposed to his mother. Above all else, Solaufein was a dreamer and a romantic, and though he relished the arts of swordplay and magic--both disciplines he bore a great deal of natural talent in--he also held a great love for music and poetry. His older brother, Secondboy and house Weapon Master Krenaste, instructed him in combat but quickly realized if left unchecked, the boy was a threat to his position, particularly since Ambika made no secret of the fact that she wished to have Solaufein groomed as his eventual replacement. Krenaste plotted to have him killed on any number of occasions, as the boy outstripped him in arms and Krenaste was not willing to risk a direct confrontation.

However, Solaufein enjoyed the favor of his other brother, Nalfein Everhate, Elderboy of the house and vaunted Archmage of Zhanduril, who had been training the boy in magic. Nalfein despised Krenaste, and in Solaufein sought to mold an ally in their incessant power struggles. It was the Archmage who had the strongest influence on the young Solaufein as he grew up. While Nalfein was a vicious schemer and arguably the most powerful mage in all of Zhanduril, he was still just a male and was forced to grovel to the lowliest priestesses of House Everhate. As such, Nalfein was extremely bitter and deeply resentful of Zhanduril’s fascist matriarchy, and he often imparted these sentiments to his young charge. He fed Solaufein’s natural curiosity about the surface, providing him with all manner of tomes on the subject--books that were absolutely forbidden in Zhanduril, by decree of Matron Ambika.

Solaufein often snuck out of the city to a secret hiding place he'd found in the dangerous environs of the nearby Underground in order to read these books, and it was during one of these secret excursions that he had an epiphany. One day Solaufein went out to the grotto to read his favorite book, a collection of surfacer songs, poetry and philosophy. He sang quietly to himself, as was his usual custom, but to his shock the grotto’s pale blue and violet phosphorescence changed to a silvery hue. A gentle, female voice began singing with him in beautiful harmony, and he was brought to tears. Solaufein knew instinctively that this was a manifestation of the mysterious goddess Eilistraee, whom he had only read sketchy legends of, but he was so moved by her song that he pledged his life to her then and there.

Solaufein kept his feelings a secret and eventually began his studies at the Academy, in Melee-Magthere, where he would meet and fall in love with a young princess of House de’Camyras, Kariza. Solaufein, who had been accustomed to running circles around his opponents in combat, was forced to utilize every nuance of technique he was familiar with in order to keep up with the female. Her level of skill and unique fighting style intrigued him, as well as her beauty and grace. They talked often, and it became immediately apparent that Kariza shared Solaufein’s feelings about drow society. He became deeply enamored with her, and brought her to his secret grotto on many occasions to talk, laugh, and argue philosophy, sometimes just to sing and dance and enjoy each other’s company. Solaufein grew to love Kariza beyond description, and dreamed of sharing a life with her. However, when Kariza’s mother, Matron Ilivarra found out about their relationship, she ordered the girl to sacrifice her lover. Kariza told him, and they made the decision to flee to the surface. They were able to make it there, and even conducted an Elistraeen bonding ceremony with each other, but their joy was short lived; Kariza’s vampiric brother Salphore, who had been hunting them, tracked the two of them down and subsequently raped and murdered Solaufein before Kariza’s very eyes.
