Preserving Magic

Preserving magic was formally established and taught to others only after the close of the Cleansing Wars. The aim of Preserving Magic is ecological restoration, and most of the discipline's spells and techniques are curative, purgative or abjurative in nature.

The Preserving arts are taught to others by Clarice Viper, who seems to have come by her healing talents naturally. With her first few students, she founded the Preservers Academy in Guldove, and from there began her quest to relieve the Gate Dimension of the scars left upon the planet by the practicioners of Defiling Magic.

Types of Preserving Magic

Preservers principally practice Gatian Elementalist Magic, though in theory any wizard taught in any discipline could be taught to use Preserving techniques. The founding Preserver establishment at the Academy in Guldove are all Gatian Elementalists. Whatever a Preserver's primary discipline, their studies at the academy teach them to shape mana for two main effects.

Healing Magic

Preservers are all accomplished healers. They learn to mend wounds and purge the body of toxins with their first few lessons. Learning to heal the body is a precursor to learning how to heal the planet.

Ecological Restoration

In the same way that Preservers cure wounds and purge toxins from the body, so can they heal the wounds of the planet. Where the planet is injured or damaged, as by pollution or other ecological damage, a Preserver's magic can restore what is lost. The process is taxing, taking a heavy toll on the Preserver's body, and so a lone Preserver can only do so much before requiring rest. Because the numbers of skilled Preservers are still quite small, and the training laborious and difficult, their impact has been minimal: to date they have only worked extensively in the El Nido islands, and their work there is far from complete.

Origins of Preserving Magic

Clarice Viper came by her power naturally; she has always been gifted with magic use, but it was only during the Cleansing Wars that her true power was made known to her by Rajaat. Rajaat alluded to the possibility that Clarice may not be human, but of some other race to whom the power to heal ecological devastation come naturally. This may explain why Clarice's students learn the Preserving arts so slowly, and even the most gifted wizards have much more difficulty with the art than Clarice herself appears to -- by contrast, Rajaat's first pupils of Defiling Magic learned the arts of destruction so quickly that he had a sorcerous army thousands strong within a few months.
