Mysidian Magic

The magic of the Crystal Dimension finds its home in Mysidia, where for generations the Mysidian mages have been the custodians of this world's arcane traditions. It is for that reason that Mysidia's name tends to go hand-in-hand with the magical discipline of this world. This is not to say Crystalese wizards are always confined to Mysidia; there are certainly enclaves of mages elsewhere, in the other nations of Crystal. But no matter where a mage resides or in which of Crystal's nations he studies, they generally hold Mysidia's traditions and rituals as sacred.

There are generally two types of magic in the Mysidian tradition: Black magic, and White magic.

Black Magic

As in places like Esper and Merge, Black Magic is simply the power of destruction. Black Mages study the powers of the Three Destructive Elements: Fire, Ice and Lightning, and learn to wield them as weapons. Mysidian Black Mages also gain a limited command over time magic, spells that conjure toxins and venoms, and a small amount of necromancy.

White Magic

White Magic is the art of healing and defense. White Mages fill out their magical repertoires with countless numbers of such spells, but round out their studies with limited time magic use, as well as enhancement spells. At greater levels of power, Mysidian White Mages learn to manipulate Holy energies into offensive attacks, though they do this sparingly, as their creed is one of non-violence.

Sages

Learned Mages of either the White or Black schools eventually advance to a point where they are permitted to expand their studies. Thus does a White Mage come to study Black Magic, or vice versa. These talented individuals are the Sages of Mysidia, scholars of all arcane disciplines, wielders of both the Black and the White Magic. They form an aristocracy in Mysidia, and carefully control their numbers, allowing only the brightest and most talented spellcasters entry to their fraternity and access to their powers.

Ritual and Tradition

The ritual surrounding Mysidian spellcraft has its roots in both Tahranist and Lunarist philosophy, and both the God of Light and the Goddess of the Moon are revered and worshipped by the Mysidians. It is held in the Mysidian Legend that the gift of Magic was passed to man by the Lunarians. The Legend is unclear as to whether Seliane was herself a Lunarian, or if she was a Lunarian deity (Eblanese Lunarism holds the latter to be true). Further, Mysidians also hold the Light of Mount Ordeals to be a sacred entity, especially among White Mages. The Mysidian Legend connects these two ideas by claiming that the god Tahran is, in fact, the ascended form of the Lunarian KluYa, though few other religious texts in the Crystal Dimension support this theory.

The Sages of Mysidia are both the keepers of the Legend, as well as the custodians of the Mysidian magical tradition.
