Early in life, Duske Fahnale showed an aptitude for magic, and more important, an understanding of the operations behind it. Defying her Mysidian teachers, she approached Black Magic as an art and science, seeking to uncover the mysteries of why magic worked how it did. She also studied in the halls of the Red Magi for a time. It wasn’t until the opening of Aryth to the Web that the answers came to her, and she journeyed to the land of the Tanes to study and gain knowledge.
There she learned of the Weave and how to deconstruct the mystical nature of magic to a, in her eyes, mechanical approach. Magic became to her a craft, one that could create beauty and wonder, but that was based on less romantic principles.
She returned with this knowledge to Crystal, but found little welcome at her old school of Black Mages in Mysidia. Shunned, she abandoned the robes and hat of a Black Mage and sought further learning elsewhere.
She found it with the Elementalists of the Paladins Templar, based in nearby Eblan. Subscribing to a different view than the Chrystalisian way of magical thought, she appreciated the freedom and flexibility her tutors allowed her, as well as the encouragement to use her talents for righteous purpose. Though she still closely followed the ways of her Goddess, she practiced some tenants of the new faith.
She applied for admission to, and passed the ordeals of the Paladins Templar at a younger than average age, and now researches combining elemental magic with holy magic. She has been nicknamed the “Gray Mage” for her efforts to meld Black and White Magic, a title she has taken to fondly.
She is currently working on her thesis, an attempt to successfuly create a Holy Firaga spell,and hopes this will grant her full title as a Templar.
