Disciples

A Disciple is a special type of religious servant, of which there are no more than a handful. More than a simple priest, a Disciple is a particularly blessed individual specially chosen by a deity to carry out that deity's agenda in the mortal realm. Unlike priests, Disciples are actually gifted with a portion of the deity's own power, in order to help them better carry out their missions.

Disciples vary in nature from deity to deity, but all Disciples share certain basic characteristics. Sharing in the power of their deity always confers immortality, as the orders they are given can often take generations to carry out. Along with immortality, they are also ridiculously powerful magic users to a one (a disproportionate number of Disciples, including Lady Ambika, Eldest Disciple of Sindrai'el, are also Sorceresses). They all share the ability to prophesy, and tend to be charismatic figureheads who act as the deity's representative in the mortal world.

Interestingly, Disciples almost always tend to embody the very best--or worst--of their deity's attributes. Perhaps they are chosen for this special role because of it, or perhaps the role changes them over time to do so; none can really say. Disciples have a kind of bond with their deity that few others can comprehend, because they are literally a part of them, and sometimes have the tendency to live apart from mortals because of it, particularly in modern times when such a concept is seen as a quaint remnant of a less-enlightened past.
