Daryn Saffron was a solid pick for First Deva, but of the Devas he is largely the least remarkable. Daryn has an impeccable record of distinguished service in the Dragoons, is among El Nido's best dragon-handlers and placed in the top of his class at the Acacian Officer's Academy. A quiet introvert, Daryn has few real friends and rarely associates with anyone outside his immediate Devic circle.
Daryn's true father was a poor fisherman from Arni who somehow managed to attract the eye of the daughter of an upper-class Terminan family. A romp in the hay lead to pregnancy, and Daryn was born without anyone having so much as a clue to who the real father was. He grew up as a ward of his grandparents, as his mother had been sent off to a convent in Guldove shortly after the birth. From his grandparents, Daryn learned to be quiet, keep to himself, and enjoy the simple pleasures of a good book while old folk were trying to nap.
He joined the Dragoons the moment he was old enough, mostly as an avenue to escape the kept life he endured under his grandparents. During the Cleansing Wars his unit was routed, his commanding officer had been slain, and Daryn and the few Dragoon survivors took to the tunnels beneath Viper Manor as a means of escape from the Defilers. He and Captain Fargo lead the resistance in Acacia during the Cleansing Wars, finally succeeding in pushing the Defilers out of the city. Daryn personally slew Borys, Rajaat's 13th Champion, spearing him straight through on his lance, and then parading through the streets of the city with the Defiler's severed head dragging along behind him.
Daryn was promoted to First Deva after the Cleansing Wars -- reportedly only after Captain Fargo turned down the post.
