Motto:

Belgar was once a promising Praetor in the Church of Wendel, but he was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force -- I mean, of the Mana. ... I mean, he was seduced by Thanatos. Yes, that is what I meant.

For his sacriliege he was sentenced to die, but he managed to escape the priests of Wendel and thereafter became foremost among the Gingrim of Alter-Mana.

Belgar received a vision, years after his exile, that his Dark God master would die or suffer banishment. He received further visions on how he might help Thanatos to elude that fate, just as Thanatos had helped him to escape from the consequences of his betrayal in the Holy City (or so the Dark God claimed). To that end he enlisted the Death Jester -- a Chaos Priest from the cult of an allied Dark God called Xaos -- to incite the Beast Kingdom to wage war against the Holy City.

Belgar's true goal was to acquire the Mana Sword and wish for the resurrection of Thanatos after he was sent to the Place Which Is No More. This became impossible after the Battle of the Purelands, where the Death Jester was slain and Duran Ferrant used the Mana Sword to restore Alter-Mana's line of Mana Knights.

Redirecting his energies, and allying with the agents of Drakonis and Inimigle, Belgar next attempted to obtain and use the energies of the remaining Mana Stones in order to create a physical avatar for Thanatos to inhabit. This plan also failed, as Drakonis betrayed his allies and recreated his own avatar to attack Forthena before Belgar or the Mavoles were ready to strike. The agents of the Three Evils (or, by now, Two Evils) withdrew to Mindas and made their stand there.

Thanatos made one last, desperate gambit before departing for the PWINM. He sent one of his artifacts, his Rod, to Belgar. Containing vast reserves of the Dark God's power, Belgar realized that it had the power to bring Thanatos into the mortal realm -- but only at a high cost. Uncharacteristically selfless for a Gingrim, Belgar sacrificed his own son, and gave up his own body so that Thanatos' Dark Lich avatar could fight in the final battle. When this avatar was destroyed by Duran and the other heroes, Belgar perished along with it.
