Horacio Truffle is the son of the esteemed Justinian Truffle, the last sovereign King of Matango, who ruled for the better part of the Great War. Near the end of the war, Justinian ceded the Kingdom to the Republic of Tasnica, joining Mandala in officially becoming Tasnican states. Matango and Mandala were not contiguous with lower Tasnica until after the Hivan War, when the Upperlands was annexed into the Republic as well.

Horacio was one of Matango's first Senators, and has held his seat continuously ever since. Originally, Horacio was an independent, but then later he was a member of the now-defunct Green Party (because its environmental platform, if nothing else about the party, was attractive to the Matangans). Well before the Greens' collapse, Truffle switched and joined the Conservatives, though he is widely regarded as one of the lesser moderates and has a strong record of supporting environmental restrictions held against Tasnica's corporations.

Though at first Truffle's defection was seen as a victory for the Conservatives, the Senator soon found himself a pariah within his own party. Though his seat was safe from most challenges because of his name recognition within his home state, his ability to legislate effectively and gain recognition within the party was somewhat stymied by his stance on environmental protection initiatives. (which, outside of Matango, are largely viewed as anti-corporate [and, to some, therefore anti-Tasnican])

Despite the difficulty, Truffle continued attempting to straddle both worlds, one where he sought to maintain decent relationships with his peers in the Conservative Party, and one where he sought to represent the prevalent attitudes of the people who sent him to do their work in Tasnicaport. It wasn't until the 40's that this happened, when Truffle orchestrated the victory of Conservative candidate Tomm Otto Heinz over the incumbent running as a Populist Reynaldo Epstein. Heinz' victory in 42 WR gave the Tasnicans a rare victory in the era of Kenny Brackhaven, and this was largely credited to Truffle's capability in statesmanship and campaigning (and keeping Heinz's eccentricity in check long enough to elect him).

Today, with the Conservatives in the minority, Truffle is one of a handful of influential moderates who actually have some influence in directing the future of the party. This is, of course, balanced by hardliners like Aggronor Stonebreaker, who quite obviously want to take the party in a very different direction.
