Talk:The Great War

What years did the Great War start and end? v 4 WB (Salynae's rise to power) to 27 WR (the fall of Baron). Remember, there is no year 0 for WB/WR. --Celiose 15:01, 27 July 2006 (CDT)

Somewhat incomplete, and a little bit open for people inserting their own characters and such as needed (the whole NAMAC conflict was pretty significant and was put in as part of one of Tex's IW entries). I figured I should take a stab at developing some of these things, as its the common plot property of all of us more or less.--Celiose 04:28, 13 August 2006 (CDT)

Wow, besides the portals, this is the most popular article.

Also, I would like to say that the reason much of the narrative of this is Tasnica-centric is because I had mainly thought about establishing the prior events of the Great War from the point of view of Tasnica, and I would welcome other peoples assistance in fleshing this out. In fact, one crazy crazy idea I had would be to do a Neo-type spinoff story about the Great War. --Celiose 17:26, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

I was seriously against the idea, when Tex mentioned it years ago, because I felt like it was kind of dicking newbs like me in the eye. Then I realized I could have, like, a secret force of Zone Knights that the whole unit dies before the end of the war (thus preserving continuity), and now I've got Blaenau Gwent pretty well developed, so while I'm mostly ignoring the great war there (i.e. they were effected but no major battles were fought there), I would totally be up for the idea of reengineering Manx history in a Great War spinoff. Let's open a dialogue! --JD 18:17, 7 September 2006 (CDT)
Why the eye, of all places? --Scen 18:25, 7 September 2006 (CDT)
I dunno. Maybe because it just sounds unpleasant, as opposed to being oppressive or insulting to our homosexual brethren (i.e. "dicked in the ass.") Mostly I just have no interest in being dicked to begin with, but the eye seems like a pretty unpleasant place for it to happen.
p.s. I think that maybe a great war spinoff would work better if it were "an alternate history" (like everyone is saying about Neo these days). That way everything doesn't have to be written word for word the same as it was originaly, just moved out of the faux-play format. Maybe Travis would provide an outline of major conflicts and events, and everyone would just go nuts from there. --JD 18:32, 7 September 2006 (CDT)
Well, we've also had Legends on the drawing board for a while. On the subject of a Great War spinoff: I always thought it'd be kind of neat if a spinoff story started just after the Great War, with the Grand Army losing. But anything Neo-esque in all its alternative-historical-"year"long glory would be cool. --Scen 18:50, 7 September 2006 (CDT)
I suggest a MFKAP. --JD 18:55, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

Whoa.

A "Great War" spin-off would actually be pretty cool. If there's any part of Kupopolis history that needs to be solidified, it would be the Great War. Heck, I'd even be interested in participating on some level: Rudra's Great War days have been outlined for years. They were just going to be some lame RPG I put together in RPGMaker, actually, but obviously I never decided to take that to 100%.

It wouldn't be, like, A LOT of writing from me. But it's always annoyed me that Rudra's past was written in a few flashbacks and introspective monologues that left a lot of loose ends I was always meaning to tie up. I'd probably write it out in the proposed Great War Remake just for completeness' sake.

(Says the guy who has a last post that as of this month is 3 years overdue) --Jipster 5:03, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

I understand Jerry's concerns, but part of my desire to have a Great War spinoff is precisely to make the Great War MORE accessible to people who weren't around to participate in it. (Which is to say, almost everyone). Besides, the Great War lasts thirty years, only three of which are (poorly) documented in posts. Plus, there are lots and lots of characters who served in the Grand Army or logically did something in the Great War who were created after the war and it would be nifty to show them. My article here was an attempt to outline a structure for the few scattered events that we know for a fact take place; the Battle of North Viper is actually derived from the very oldest post I have on my hard drive, by Aurora. The Battle of Albrooker plain was just a placeholder as happening in 14 WR until Tex did an IW entry about it (with a storyline I've tried to honor and include here). One of my hoped-for megapost projects has been a "Year One" megapost of GACA.

Matt is right that the idea of "Legends", a spinoff story set in ancient history of Kupopolis, has been around longer, as has the idea for a "Neo II". Balancing the spinoff with getting Proper chugging again is always tricky, though. Nonetheless, there is a lot of excitement around this idea so it perhaps brooks discussion. --Celiose 19:40, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

Maybe I was unclear, but my "concerns" were like three or four years ago and I no longer have them anymore. I'm all over the idea now. I think I like the idea of a Great War spinoff even more than the idea of a Legends spinoff (which overall I'm in love with, aside from the fact that I think it should be set far further in the past than has been kicked around before, since it doesn't make sense to me that everyone in the web would have "forgotten" about everyone else in the web in that amount of time... but that's a discussion for another time.) I think I'm more in love with a Neo II, but that's probably just because I know what I would do in a Neo II.
As far as gettigng proper chugging again, remember the posting-surge in proper that followed the end of Neo. Of course, it fell off sharply from there, largely from Tex and I losing interest. There's also the subject of The Next Big War. Do we do a spinoff (whichever one) or the Next Big War, or both or neither? --JD 19:58, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

I'm for the idea of a spinoff. Any of the ideas discussed are good by me. Now, seriously, who isn't in favor of doing a spinoff? - Xstryker 21:37, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

And maybe we should either take this discussion to the Proper boards, a Powwow, or it's own discussion page? - Xstryker 21:37, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

Make a discussion page about spinoff stories. I am working on organizing a Powwow and we'll see a post about it soon. --Celiose 21:44, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

OMG, I am all over this spinoff thing. I can write about Marcus' exploits! Evil!Shana! And wtf the Drow were doing. And, and...omg. PLZ --Aurora 00:01, 8 September 2006 (CDT)

Great War soundtrack anyone?

I'm putting the finishing touches on a fan soundtrack for the Great War, and will hopefully be done with it in the next few days. It came out weirdly Shana-centric, but oh well. Writeup and download link to follow in GD, if anyone's interested. --Aurora 04:46, 19 January 2007 (CST)
