Kupopolis is an enormous story with virtually unlimited settings and possibilities, yet for whatever reason some of us are in love with spin-offs. One of the reasons might be that kupop is so huge that sometimes it's fun to write something of a smaller, limited, defined scope. Since another thing we like to do is talk, here is a page specifically designed for that.

Neo

Neo was our first, and only, spinoff to date. It was set one hundred years into the future of Kupopolis and began with the death of Celiose Cole. The major plot was a "second great war" where Tasnica, The United Crystal States, and the Trianglon Empire teamed up to invade the rest of the web. It was scheduled to run for one year, august to august, and ended up wrapping up about a month late.

What worked and what didn't

Neo was largely planned by Travis and Tex, with Jerry coming onboard later in the process. As such, some some writers felt out of the loop and weren't happy with the way things were laid out. Almost everyone who wrote in proper at the time wrote in Neo, in varying amount. Neo also drew in two completely new writers, each of whom made exciting contributions to the story. Additionally a third "new" writer played an important part in the story, though he had been around briefly prior to Neo as well.

Pros

  • Allowed some writers to take liberties with their assets that they wouldn't do in Proper (the death of Celiose Cole, the dissolution of the Grand Army, the fall of Tasnica and the obliteration of the Esper Union)
  • Reinvigorated some writers, there was a brief boost in kupop postings after it ended.
  • Tested Dustin's new Sliver board, generating far more posts in a similar time frame than kupop normally would.

Cons

  • Some writers felt out of the loop by excessive overplanning and cliquishness
  • Not everyone enjoyed it
  • Caused a year long near-halt in proper posting

Legends

A potential spin-off which would take place in the past, rather than Neo's possible future. The only "hard" date involved is the time frame Travis has set up involving Belgememnon, though it's been suggested that the time frame of legends can be arbitrary, and that the timelines of Kupopolis Proper's history need not sync up exactly between the dimensions (that is, Belgememnon's Mana Dimension is 1400 years in the past, though the other dimensions in Legends need not adhere to that time frame)

Pros

  • People who have written involved backstories for their nations and peoples would get to write about them, in-story.

Cons

  • Might detract from proper.
  • Over-planning by some writers could lead to disaffection among other writers (as happened in Neo)

Neo II

A direct continuation from the Neo spinoff.

Pros

  • Writers who participated in Neo would get to revisit their old characters -- or, rather, those that didn't die.
  • Writers who didn't participate would have the chance to imagine their assets over a hundred years into the future, and experiment with an alternate future. (again, if any of their assets didn't get totally annihilated in the first Neo story)

Cons

  • Would detract from proper. (as in Neo)
  • ... What's left to write about!? It's all destroyed!!!!
  • Most writers who didn't write in Neo are disinclined to write in a sequel.

The Great War Redux

A spin-off dealing, in part or in whole, with the Great War. It might encompass only the last few years of the war, or several periods in the war via a series of discrete "parts."

Pros

  • The majority of kupop seems incredibly excited about the prospect.
  • People who weren't around for the Great War (almost everyone) would get a chance to make their mark on it and explore what their characters or other assets were doing in that important time in web history.
  • People who were around for the Great War would get a chance to do it up right.

Cons

  • Might detract from proper.
  • Some people are not excited about it.
