A collective of gunslingers established in the Republic of West by unscrupulous lawyer Lucius Blackmoor, the Society largely consisted of various outlaws that Blackmoor had helped dodge the law. The Society served as his personal militia, and worked to maintain order in far-removed townships and villages in the "sticks" where the Republic's law wasn't as strictly enforced. That was the idea in theory. They were little more than a large posse of bullies, with the backing of an influential lawyer.

Within the Society itself, there was little organization. The core of the Society came from the surviving members of an outlaw gang called the Black Hearts, led by Eagle Sharpe. These men were considered 'commanders,' and Sharpe the Society's champion. With no rank, newcomers to the Society tended to take orders from veterans. And by and large, everyone in the Society respected Sharpe more than they did Blackmoor.

The Society was headquartered in Blackmoor Realty, just outside the small town of Dirty Pool. Following the quick-draw tournament that Blackmoor hosted, Sharpe was left dead at the hands of Eric "Fasthand" Freed, who then entered the building to seek his revenge upon Blackmoor. Rather than oppose him, the Society let him pass without conflict, as a show of respect for his skill, which had surpassed Sharpe's. In essence, Fasthand was unofficially declared the Society's new champion.

When Fasthand delivered news of Blackmoor's death and his shady dealings to the Republic, the Society scattered to the winds. Those who were outlaws either disappeared into the sticks, or were captured by the Marshals. Those who had no outstanding criminal record (apart from their association with Sharpe and Blackmoor) were given the option of entering itno service with the Marshals. Some Society members are rumored to have become sheriffs in small towns or at least become roving bounty hunters.
