Kalen Verek

Legendary frontman of the first bonafide goth band in the Web, Sister Nightbreed. A Marak native of Bonro, Kalen dropped out of high school to plunge headfirst into the Ticonderan glam rock movement, which was in full swing in those days (perhaps a reaction to the political upheavals). He was lead singer of several bands that went nowhere fast, until a fateful meeting in the Sobbing Kitten Theater with a dancer named Ophelia "Scarlet" Kendall. Kalen was mesmerized by her vampire persona and decided to form a new band around that theme. Scarlet, herself a veteran of several glam bands, joined up with Kalen and brought along Lars Erdhart, a pop artist friend who was also heavily into the Bonro glam scene. Kalen called the act Sister Nightbreed, and were the first band signed to the fledgling Sera:Nova Records.

Kalen and Scarlet married, and the band enjoyed many years of success, with hits such as "Snake Dance", "Live Fast and Die Pretty", "Dancefloor Tragedy", "Temple of Love", and arguably the first and most beloved goth song ever, "Empress Salynae's Dead". Eventually, however, Lars left the band to pursue his pop art full time, and after rotating guests for a while, Kalen and Scarlet decided to fold the band for good. They settled down in Bonro, and bought a rundown eatery called the Melody Diner, renovating it and turning it into a haven for nocturnal clubgoers.

Kalen vehemently denies starting any sort of new musical genre; to this day, he identifies as "the last of the glam rockers", although his many admirers in the Bonro scene (and the scene in general) would only point to this as proof that he is indeed the Godfather of Goth.

Every year there are rumors of a Sister Nightbreed reunion at Carnivale of the Macabre, and every year Kalen laughs them off as wishful thinking (or an S:N ploy to sell tickets). The man is perfectly content drinking Black Widows in his diner, playing aging rockstar grandpa to those darned kids in black that followed in his footsteps.
